Crazy Daily Fun

A little off from my usual topics, but we went to the air show today. You can probably guess what career my husband used to have (although, he flew a desk.) My dad and pretty much every male in my (and my husband’s) family has served.

Lots of fun today. Started off kinda cold, then hours in the blazing sun. Very “Texas spring weather”. As always, we loved it. We skipped walking through the static planes for the first time ever, but I don’t know if I could have added any more to my day.

My boys are in high school and really enjoyed the experience. We go every time it comes through. But we had no shows for about 8 years (with what I’ve always considered a “soft” drawdown) that Obama did. He took a lot of things from the families. They still haven’t reopened some of the things that he closed. Raw deal. If you aren’t in the service: you don’t always see what happens to members when different people cycle through.

Anyway, got teared up during the Tora, Tora, Tora reenactment. My husband’s dad fought on the ground in WWII in Italy, and his division had 80% losses, so the reenactment means a lot to us. We’ve been to Hawaii and toured the war museums and the Battleship Missouri. I’ve been to the old USS Arizona memorial, twice in my life, before they closed it for repairs.

My dad was a pilot instructor during the Vietnam era, but luckily the war stopped a couple of weeks before he was supposed to deploy. My husband was in, during the Persian Gulf War, got out in the drawdown under Clinton, and later he went back in during the Iraqi Freedom Operation. My husband’s service is why I have raised my boys, for long periods of time, with no help at home. We’re a family proud to serve, always.

Anyway, if you’ve never been to an air show, it’s worth your while. Go early and sit in front of the Thunderbirds, bring folding chairs, umbrellas and ear plugs!
