Winner of the most colorful visitor I’ve had in my garden. This is a flame skimmer. In late summer I have dozens of large dragonflies. They eat all of the mosquitos they can find. I think they are magnificent! But, this guy is definitely not your average dragonfly! I’ve only seen the one. In the background you can see butterfly pea flowers. Those are a high heat, tropical pea. I only grew those one year because they took over my beds. But I will try planting some, in a different area, this year and maybe I’ll see another flame skimmer. This is the greatest reason to avoid chemicals in your garden. You will have opportunities to see chemically sensitive, unusual or rare insects, reptiles, amphibians and mammals that you otherwise would not see.

It was definitely a surprise! I didn’t know they existed. Thanks for coming by!
