Photos from the end of last year’s experimental fruit bed. Above that is: a current bloom on my son’s lemon tree. The cherries shot up, even in our miserably hot, dry summer. These are cut low to keep their canopies low so that I can net them easily to keep the squirrels and other rodents out of them. The cherries new leaves after I added the shade cloth. I built these on a traditional hugelkulter. I will not do that again. Logs and trenches were too much work. I’m going back to using bark chips instead of logs.
The straw mulch really helped. Lots of people lost everything outside last year from the combination of months above 100°F and zero rain. Last summer was brutal and not the best year to be starting new plants. Our water bill was astronomically high, but I didn’t lose anything.
I eventually had to add shade. As long as I keep these low I can keep doing this. Hopefully, as their roots grow they get better at handling the heat!
Meet you out in the garden and we’ll try our southern sweet cherries and apples!
