Crazy Great Links

We’re going to go down a goofy road today.

Do you know Monty Python?

I used to hand tune my TV to PBS where they would show things like Doctor Who and Fawlty Towers. I loved British humor!

Everyone should see: Monty Python And The Holy Grail. One of the funniest, goofball movies ever. It’s a must watch in this lifetime. There are also years worth of television skits, in the “Flying Circus” show, by this comedy troop. I am warped and weird, from exposure to their brilliant and crazy take on life. Some met at Cambridge, some at Oxford. These were not lightweight thinkers. Having had a scientist as a grandfather, I can attest to the accuracy of Python humor, being the humor of intellectuals. My grandfather was this weird and this funny.

If you were super nerdy like I was in the 80s: you can probably quote most Python that you have seen, because you have watched and rewatched it a billion times (Oh, the memories of Blockbuster video…)

Even though many people are aware of the Holy Grail movie, I don’t know as many people who have seen Monty Python’s Meaning Of Life. (Yes, there’s also the Life of Brian, but I haven’t tried to sit through that since I was a teenager. Maybe I would like it more these days, more than 40 years later.) The Meaning of Life is so much dirtier, and in some scenes disgusting, but a fantastic comedic film. I rank it up there with Airplane, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Caddy Shack, The Wayan Brothers and newer-ish ones like Tropic Thunder and Date Night or Who’s Line Is It Anyway? Just so you know going in, they are going to offend anyone with any sense, but: that’s the point. And, if you can’t get down with the movies and shows I’ve listed, take your sensitive nature on a different path. You will not enjoy the wild ride that is Python.

The Holy Grail is mostly kid friendly. If you skip the scene with the virgins in the story of sir Galahad (it has sexual content). My kids watched the Holy Grail when they were little, because: I knew that part was coming and skipped it. We even have two sets of coconut halves for the galloping horse scenes.

Warp their humor while they’re young, I say.

The Meaning of Life is way more racy. Some serious sexual content that your kids will gross out about, if their parents show this to them (or if you are kids, and show your parents). Uptight people are not invited. Everything is dirty, absurd and gross. I just showed my kids this movie, and they are in high school. I waited until they were almost adults. But, if you aren’t a parent, this movie is awesome as is.

One of their best, and cleanest songs. PS if the animation is more than you can handle, go somewhere else for your comedy, because it just gets much, much worse.

One of the songs was covered by Stephen Hawking, of all people. So if you are on the Monty Python train, you have some incredibly smart companions! The Hawking cover is below.

You know you are in good company if Stephen Hawking did a cover! (This is especially for all of my fellow super nerds out there! It starts with the Python live show in 2014, there’s a transition and then Stephen Hawking does his version.)

It’s time to stop clutching at pearls in the horror that is offending your sensibilities, and give in to deep belly laughs!

Thanks Monty Python: for your absolute and total weirdness. I have learned much from you!

    1. Yay! Always great to know a fellow Python lover! I have so many quotes permanently etched in my brain! It’s like the Princess Bride. If you can’t quote the whole movie, you’ve got to be on a different life path than I’m on! Thanks for coming by. I always smile when I see you!

  1. I’m English so Monty Python is part of the cultural fabric (I believe every household has at least one DVD box set)! I recently re-watched Holy Grail, it’s just so, so gloriously silly and it’s just as funny to me in my 30s now as it was when I first saw it at 14 (when everyone thought “shrubbery” was the funniest thing in the world)!

Life of Brian is also fantastic, but a bit more of a thinker! Watching that today actually feels more relevant than it did to me as a teen.. especially Brian desperately trying to persuade his followers to think for themselves!

    1. Maybe I’ll give it another go. I’m in my fifties and American, but I’m really glad to hear it’s still appreciated over the pond! Thanks for coming by and commenting. I appreciate the visit!
