Do You Duolingo?

I have a language learning hobby. I ended up with about 8 years of French between middle school, high school and college. I was not at all serious about it until college.

I started with several languages on Duolingo, years ago, and ended up just focusing on French. This year I tried to learn chess, so I can play my kids.

I’m not sure I’m ever going to be any good at chess and I’m still not fluent in French, but I find learning fun, so I continue.

I’m always surprised at the end of the year that my daily learning habit is unusual. But as habits go, gardening and language learning are pretty healthy habits to have.

I usually only do a single lesson each day, which makes engaging this app doable. It takes me a couple of minutes and I fit it into my day when I can. (Sometimes, right before I’m going to lose my daily steak!)

I encourage anyone who wants to drop a bad habit, to pick something up that is a simple daily habit, that can be tracked, that they can be proud of at the end of the next year.

Merry Christmas and happy habit forming for 2026!

Meet you out in the garden to compare how we’ve grown. Both in years (and knowledge), since we were kids.

  1. I used Duolingo for two years to learn some Spanish. I then gave it up as life got too busy. A few years later, I started working on my Spanish more seriously, with a teacher. Duolingo was definitely very helpful because I breezed through the first two levels (A1 and A2) and was able to complete my B1 (Intermediate) exam after a year of study!

It’s also great for going on holiday. I used it for a few weeks to learn Italian and was able to get along reasonably well during our holiday.
