First Flowers: Dragon Fruit

My dragon fruit has finally flowered!

I missed the flower opening because we were college shopping. However, I only missed it by a day, so I got to see the flower before it completely died back. There’s a second one.

(If you were wondering, the forks in the soil were to keep my cats out of the pot while it was inside for the winter.)

I’m guessing this flower is going to open tonight.

I went out and tipped the branch ends on the dragon fruit to induce more flowering. This is an “Edward’s Baby” and is supposed to be self fertile. I got this as a live plant cutting from rareseeds.com There’s a yellow fruited one in this pot, too. But it’s only a year old. I got it off Etsy. I think it needs another yellow fruited pollinator.

At least, I know that the main  plant is old enough to fruit. It was worth it to bring the massive plant inside last winter.

Almost ready to open. I did not see either of these four days ago when I left town. However, I don’t remember if I even looked before I left.

Even with these flowers closed: they’re still pretty impressive!

Meet you out in the garden to enjoy a night blooming cactus that makes tasty fruit!

    1. Yes. This is the flower of a red fleshed dragon fruit. They are supposed to be very different tasting from the ones in stores. They are not hardy. They are fully tropical and I have had damage to the plant under 50° they take up a huge amount of room and are not easy to move as the cactus breaks really easily. However, for these blooms, I’m game for bringing them in. Plus I’m planning on building a greenhouse on one side of my back porch in the next couple of months. Hopefully, they are happy in there! Thanks for the coming by and commenting. I appreciate the visit!

  1. Thank you for such a helpful answer. I hope you get your greenhouse built for them so you can enjoy eating those vitamin C-filled fruits. I love adding them to my smoothies for the color and vitamins.
