Riddle me this, Batman: how does a leaf, follow a stream, a couple of hours after a storm with a clear drop (or three) of rain? It floated through rocks and on muddy water, but the raindrop it carries is still pure. Pretty, even if I can’t explain it!
I’m in Arizona right now helping some friends out. I took a walk around the block today and also went through their compost pile. Tons of crossed tomatoes and squash, because: tomatoes or squash are notorious for crossing! It’s cooled down. Not so many hot days. It was a beautiful day and I’m in a happy mood!
Some bramblesJudging by the amount of rose hips this must have been completely covered in flowers! Things I gathed on the way. (Next time I need pockets!) Including a few ripe, and a couple of dried, jujube. Quite tasty, however, my friends said it sends runners 30 feet from the plant. (That’s why I don’t grow them.) But they do taste like green apples when just ripening and when dried, like dates… Dates with a weird aftertaste. Not much flesh and a huge clingstone seed.Seed and rock gathering. Compost pile is full of tomatoes! Sometimes texture is just as amazing as anything else in the world of plants. Mesquite (this is the velvet leaf type) is pretty, seeds are tasty but it’s covered in thorns that can puncture car tires!Lots of wildflowers. I was sure to grab some seed. Even dandelions are pretty, close up!Zinnia in a pot. There’s a rainbow in this picture and possibly a blue fairy. One can only hope to be visited by fairies on a walk! 🧚Red, red rose.OK. Lots of stuff not to touch and certainly not to eat.
The Solanaceae family includes tomatoes and potatoes but also belladonna. Avoid touching things you can’t identify and definitely don’t eat them!
Some things I didn’t touch. Wild tomato cousins are poisonous. Cactus fruit. A blue dragonfly. Mesquite peeling.
It was a magnificent day and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Happy days are wished to you!
