Oh, The Weeds…

So, this year I am starting really late. I’m out beyond where I should be, to be planting corn and potatoes. But, hey, you work with what you got. Because I was so sick a few weeks ago the weeds in the yard are tall and happy and laughing at me!

Oh yes, they think they are winning. Freaking weeds. I am a patient gardener though!

My least favorite thing in spring is running the soaker hoses. There’s no good way to water corn from above, unless you are growing on an industrial scale. Soaker hoses are perfect. But, there’s a lot of squatting and and standing. Which sometimes makes me dizzy. I get corn smut if I keep the ears wet. Some people think it’s a delicacy. I think it’s gross. Of course I’ve never bothered trying it. Maybe it’s awesome.

Weeded with two blueberry bushes I put in last year. My native soil is way too basic to grow acid loving plants in it. I run vines on this play set support. I moved it after I took this picture. It’s in the banana bed at the moment. Last year I thought it would hold the bananas up but they get so tall. It’s just silly to try and use them that way.

So I weeded one of the beds yesterday. Today, I ran the hose and put an oscillating sprinkler on the bed to water the corn in. I was adjusting the water height and all of the sudden there was no water. I have garbage hoses out there, so I started backtracking to find the kink. About ten minutes into this I remembered my husband was going to change out the faucet in the shower. Grrr. Wish he’d have let me know he was starting that project, that was a big waste of time.

Soaker hoses run with my doggie helper. He’s a whippet. He’s sort of a smaller version of a greyhound (or a bigger version of an Italian greyhound) but the breed also has some terrier in it. If you have rodents or possums in your yard: I fully recommend a whippet. He kills everything outside and is still gentle and sweet with the indoor cats. Cool breed. He also spends most of the day asleep. He has a cat’s energy profile and a dog’s personality.

Came in, and yes, husband had shut the water off. OK. Well I’m all muddy and I haven’t made dinner. Soaped up my hands… Duh. I mean really, so freaking stupid. So I’m wiping my muddy, soapy hands off with a paper towel. Guess I am going to get a water bottle out to finish this. I do however, need a shower. Hopefully my hubby gets this new faucet in… There’s a lot of cussing coming from the bathroom.

Planting seed.

Anyway, corn is finally in. Potatoes tomorrow, after I weed the beds, and then maybe another bed of corn.

I still have to build the permanent wicking pots I’m making for the trees that Raintree is sending me this year. I need to clean out the banana bed and remove a bunch that I don’t want anymore. I am trying some other experimental plants like pawpaws on the north side of my house in raised hugelkulter beds with dripline. Plus: I’ve accrued 9 plants from “sow exotic” over the winter and early spring. I really enjoy that online nursery. Great place for subtopical and tropical plants for collectors.

I got a bunch of peppers for hot sauce and salsa (for my husband) and a bunch of paste tomatoes for canning. The milk jugs are full of tomatoes I started from seed. I’m also trying a hydroponic tube and several landscape fabric bags with saucers under them. Way cheaper than buying big pots.

So much to do. But: it keeps me young and strong so I can’t complain.

Meet you out in the garden, hopefully with the water main turned on.
