My Favorite Hummingbird Feeders

Because of our heat, and the fact that our main hummingbird variety will not share with other birds: I use really small feeders and place them all over my yard.

On the way out the door with fresh hummingbird food.

I usually have five out at a time. In our feel like 112° heat, they go bad quickly and need to be cleaned out, soaked in bleach water, scrubbed, rinsed and refilled often. You can get these here: feeders

I put hummingbird food out until they leave for the winter. There’s not a lot of liquid in south Texas in the summer.

I had a problem with bees one year so I bought these bee guards: bee guard (they are a little big for the feeders so I glued mine on with gorilla glue, like this: glue.) They have a little hinge on them and you can open them up to scrub them out. I also use tangle trap on the poles that I hang these on to keep the ants out. Like this: tangle trap

Most plastic feeders leak, no matter the size. I use plumber’s tape around the threads on mine, and they stay leak proof for as long as I leave the tape on. Here’s a link to plumber’s tape: plumber’s tape

In spring I have a lot of flowers. Late summer I have a lot of flowers. But early summer, after the daylillies die down: there’s not much out there for the birds.

I really enjoy sitting on my porch watching the birds fight over the nectar!

(Reminds me of the saying: It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog… or in this case: the fight in the hummingbird!)

My birds are grateful for the extra calories and I am just grateful to watch them zip around!

Meet you out in the garden where we’ll sit in the shade and watch the hummers!

  1. I can’t wait to put mine out!! I got everything ready…I love hummingbirds they never really come to my house I’ve seen a couple last year because they probably were attracted by the flowers I had in the yard.

    1. I always plant things for the birds and bees. I make sure my birdbaths are full. Down here in south Texas we can have months in the summer at over 100° and no rain. One trick I have found with attracting hummers is to have bushes they can perch and hide in and mixing the nectar a little heavy on the sugar. You can find recipes for how to do that online. Good luck! Mine are joy with wings!

  2. How unneighborly! The hummingbirds here are very social, at least around their feeders. (I suspect that they are more territorial around their nesting sites.) They are pleased to share with their neighbors, and can actually perch in pairs and take turns at individual receptacles of a feeder.

    1. You live where all of the YouTube videos are filmed with fifty hummers in a bath. I was so disappointed when we moved here and I’d put out a regular sized feeder and it would spoil before it was half gone. I see a lot of chasing other birds away, but if I put enough feeders out one can’t dominate them all AND eat. Good to see you today!
