Summer Fruits Are Forming

Future pomegranate. I love these, but: processing a whole bunch of these, no matter the method, is tedious.

My poor sick pear. I’m not sure if the drought and heat last year got to it, or if the fireblight and iron chlorosis is doing it in. So sad to see my twelve year old tree in decline. However, I will never plant another pomme fruit. They just aren’t made for our disease pressure and growing conditions. It took a lot to keep this guy going.

My indicator plant. This is a closet plant (peace lily or Spathiphyllum). This is a plant from my grandfather’s funeral about thirty years ago. I inherited this plant after my grandma passed about 25 years ago. The original plant finally died. I was so sad. I left the pot outside over the winter that year. This guy sprouted that spring from seeds I didn’t realize we’re in the soil! Anyway, this starts to weep like this when it’s dry. All I have to do is look outside, and I can tell from this plant, when I need to water my pots.
This giant tree is full of figs. We had great spring weather to hydrate this tree. It pumps out fruit all summer. It’s currently full of thousands of figs.
Tomatoes are almost ready! I need to net this bed before the birds find them.
More tomatoes!

Corn is just about ready to pull. I got these in about two weeks late this spring. I’ve never had to harvest in this kind of heat. I’m hoping there isn’t an issue with the ears.

Argg! There is an issue: about half of each ear didn’t “make”. Zero pollination about half way up. I’m guessing it was the heat. No more planting corn late! It’s either on time or grow something else.

I love homegrown corn! So sad I got about half of what I should have gotten from these plants. Learn something new every year.
Some of what I have out there. I’ve been too busy to blanch and freeze, or even harvest. I’ll get that done a little later tonight.
Grrr. I guess my lesson is: don’t get deathly ill in February.

Meet you out in the garden to enjoy the beginning of summer.

  1. Nothing like home-grown corn, even if the ears are a little wonky! Yummmmm! Break out the butter and a tiny dash of salt!😋😋

  2. ? Spathiphyllum from seed? Are you certain that it did not just shed its foliage and then regenerate from its dormant rhizomes? Those that are deadheaded do not get an opportunity to produce seed, and even those that are neglected (not deadheaded) do not produce many viable seed.

    1. If it resurrected, it went through several freezes and no water for months. It was dead as far as I could see, lost all growth over an extended time. I don’t keep up with my lily unless there’s quite a bit of dead, which would have the seeds. There’s a lot of discussion of seeds online. I think, because my plant is outdoors it can get pollinated. I let it flower, I like the odd looking tropical spathes and spadix. I do think it died of old age and that the freeze and dry conditions might have helped prime whatever seeds were in the pot. I think you and I have had this discussion before. This is my best guess of what happened. Good to see you today!
